Back to Dax

Changelog

Every release of Dax for macOS, from day one.

3.0.1

September 5, 2026

  • Fixed a crash when pressing ⌘E in the launcher. Several layout loops between palette windows and their hosting views could fight each other into a non-converging state.
  • Dragging launcher tiles shows a grabbing-hand cursor instead of the default pointer.
  • Setapp build naming and icon fixes.

3.0

Dax 3.0 — Available on Setapp

September 5, 2026

  • Dax is on Setapp. One subscription, no separate account — Setapp subscribers get every tool and every AI credit Dax offers.
  • New Tab lets you choose which agent opens first instead of always starting the last one you used.
  • Image to Prompt is now metered like every other AI tool, with clear usage tracking.
  • MCP servers are grouped by connection state — connected servers appear first, servers needing sign-in are separated below.
  • Toast notifications are trimmed at word boundaries and capped to their real line count instead of an estimate.
  • Agent Watch stops guessing a sheep's colour when it doesn't have enough information.
  • Shell hold gives local panes a second chance before marking them as disconnected.
  • Visual polish across permissions, launcher panels, annotation editor, and the Setapp usage page.

2.40.0

MCP Catalog, Key Cast & Server Paths

September 4, 2026

  • ⇧⌘M opens the MCP panel — see what the agent in a pane can reach, and add MCP servers from a catalog instead of editing a config file.
  • Key Cast (⌥⌘K) draws the keys you press on screen for recording demos — chords only, so nothing you type leaks into the video. Place it by dragging.
  • ⇧⌘W reopens the agent you just closed, in the same conversation. Works for tabs and projects you shut by mistake.
  • Paths and links resolve on a server now. A `~` expands against the machine the path is on, a file outside the project is searched for, and a link wrapped across lines opens whole.
  • Rebuilt image editor across every tool — background removal, corner rounding by any amount, and a grouped markup bar.
  • A folder you already have open is switched to instead of opened a second time.
  • Per-agent spend tracking — see what each agent has used, right on its pane.
  • BYOK removed rather than left switched off. Inject MD renamed to Inject MD or Skill.

2.39.0

Shepherd Knows Where You Are

August 30, 2026

  • Every pane names itself after the work in it — read by Apple's on-device model, so nothing leaves your Mac. Panes you've named manually keep your name.
  • Colour tells folders apart. Every tab in a folder shares that folder's colour — the tree, the tab bar, the flock, and the Agent Monitor all follow at once.
  • ⌘J leads with where you've lately been. Bouncing between two agents is one keystroke each way instead of a hunt.
  • ⌃Tab steps through agents, not past them. A folder with four agents across two tabs now visits all of them.
  • Drag a pane onto another and they swap places. Drop a file onto a pane and its path goes to the agent in it.
  • Paste a picture into a pane on a server and get a link back. ⌘V on a remote pane now uploads the image and inserts the link.
  • ⌘E file browser answers the pointer properly: a hand over a file, a caret in the search box, an arrow everywhere else.
  • ⌘L machine picker can be typed into — the server you want is one word away.
  • Copy button beside a pane's folder path for quick access.
  • Link hovering says ⌘-click before you know the gesture, and links glow in the pane's own colour.

2.38.0

Markdown Viewer, Accent Colour, Shepherd & Palette Rebuild

August 27, 2026

  • Dax renders Markdown itself now — its own parser and layout, so tables, nested lists, task lists, block quotes, footnotes and fenced code all come out the way the document says.
  • Markdown Viewer: open, edit and save `.md` files with live rendering. Press Space on a Markdown file in Finder and a Quick Look extension shows the same thing.
  • Custom accent colour: Dax's own orange by default, Match macOS, the eight macOS colours, Graphite, or pick anything with a colour well.
  • Every launcher palette rebuilt from one set of shared parts — same titled header, same field, same rows across Snippets, Agent Watch, Vibe History, Secrets, Ask, Remove BG and File Drop.
  • Shepherd cross-fades between machines instead of cutting; the herd you leave is parked rather than demolished. Server connections survive across switches, drops and sleep.
  • ⌘N makes a project, ⌘O opens one, ⌘L opens a machines card — all drawn by Dax rather than borrowed from the sidebar.
  • One-time credit top-ups replace bundle subscriptions. Usage screen simplified to the balance and the packs.
  • Context Fill is now Context Form Fill, which is what it does.
  • Shelved: PRD Maker, Clipboard History, Command History and Suggest a Tool are off the launcher. Collab (Share/Join) removed and being replanned from scratch — connecting to a server is completely untouched.

2.37.1

August 21, 2026

  • Typing and dictation land in the pane you're looking at. Shepherd now keeps keyboard focus in the active agent, so keystrokes, Willow, Wispr Flow and macOS Dictation all reach the right terminal.
  • Closing a card or finishing a rename hands the keyboard straight back to the pane.

2.37.0

Dax Shepherd & Agent Monitor

August 20, 2026

  • The herd tool is called Dax Shepherd, and it has a place on the Home screen rather than only a shortcut.
  • Agent Monitor sorts agents by what they want from you: Needs you, Working, Done, Idle. View as a List or as a Flock — the whole herd at a glance, grouped by tab.
  • New Agent asks every time and knows what the machine on screen has installed — including a server — offering to install what it hasn't, all nineteen agents in one press.
  • Keys: ⌘B for the sidebar, ⌘F for full screen, ⌘/ for the whole list.
  • Tabs have a lane of their own that scrolls, and the seam between two terminals says it can be dragged.
  • A spent quota now says so in a toast, with the upgrade dialog behind it.
  • Dax draws in its own orange on every Mac, whatever the system accent colour is set to.

2.35.0

Live Agent Tracking & Setup Overhaul

August 19, 2026

  • Herdr tracks what every agent is doing as it happens — an agent that finishes or stops to ask you something changes on the spot, instead of when you click it.
  • A machine with no coding agent installed offers you one (server or this Mac), and New Agent starts what that machine actually has.
  • Setting Dax up asks for one permission at a time, says what each one lets Dax do, and asks once. The tour ends on your home screen.
  • Image Ask goes straight from the snip to the question — annotate with ⌘E when it helps.
  • The .pkg installer works on a Mac set to any language.

2.34.0

Herdr Server Test with Connection Log

August 19, 2026

  • Test is in the server dialog now, next to Done. You see the connection happen: which address answered, which key was offered, what the server accepted.
  • Invisible connection failures fixed: pasted addresses with invisible characters (non-breaking spaces, zero-width spaces) are cleaned automatically. Downloaded key files with wrong permissions are narrowed to owner-only.
  • A password you just typed is the one it tests, not the one saved last time.

2.33.1

August 19, 2026

  • Dax narrows your key's permissions for you. A `.pem` from AWS arrives readable by everyone; Dax tightens it to owner-only before connecting, so the key works on the first try.
  • Better error messages when a key file can't be used: names the file and the one command that fixes it.

2.33.0

Herdr on a Server, PRD Maker, Remove BG & File Drop

August 19, 2026

  • Herdr on a server (⌃⌥.): connect a server over SSH and the herd runs there. Same window, same tabs, same agents, running on the machine with the repo and the RAM. A Remote Panel shows the coding agents, open ports, websites and certificates on the box.
  • Tabs in Herdr: ⌘T for a tab, ⌘N for an agent, ⌃Tab to walk the bar, ⌘W to close an agent. The sidebar groups agents under their tab.
  • PRD Maker (⌃⌥E): say what you want to build and get the brief for it. A composer to start from, three ways to be asked, and a document with no holes in it.
  • Remove BG (⌃⌥D): cut the subject out of a picture, on-device. Snip or pick a file, preview the cutout, leave with the image or a link.
  • File Drop shake-to-drop: pick up a file, wiggle it, and a drop shelf appears under the pointer. Drop on it and the upload starts immediately.
  • Ask AI searches the web: a globe for a quick web search, a magnifier for cited Deep Research. Markdown renders as headings, lists and code blocks.
  • Your first five minutes: an interactive demo that walks you to your first badge, with badges that arrive as a card, a lap of light, and some paper in the air. Badges belong to the account, not the Mac.
  • Keep your Mac awake with the lid shut: one switch in Settings, a helper that installs itself, and Dax holds the Mac open while it's working.
  • Coding agents, found and installed for you: Settings sees which CLIs are on this Mac and offers the ones that aren't.
  • Appearance pane with launcher blur: the screen goes soft behind the launcher instead of floating on a hard edge.
  • Fanout has been retired; saved profiles carry over to Herdr projects.

2.32.0

Herdr, Clip to Link, Home Screen & Badges

August 16, 2026

  • Herdr (⌃⌥.): a herd of coding agents in one window. Connect a folder, add agents, split them across the screen. A sidebar tree shows groups, agents and their status.
  • Clip to Link (⌃⌥;): record a corner of your screen and get a link to the clip. GIF, MP4 or MOV, each showing its real size.
  • A home screen: the Dock icon opens a page with your name, your photo, and a shelf of badges that fills up as you use Dax.
  • Notifications: Do Not Disturb (⌃⌥Z), toasts go to Notification Centre, and hovering a toast holds it still.
  • Logging out takes the session with it. Snips photograph the screen before the menu can close. Settings closes on Escape.

2.31.0

Clipboard History Overhaul & Agent Watch Costs

August 12, 2026

  • Clipboard History: links show what they point at, code is syntax-coloured, and everything is filed under the day you copied it.
  • Image viewer: scroll to zoom anchored on the pointer, 10% to 1000%, and pinch anywhere across the panel.
  • Agent Watch: what each session has spent, and a stop button on every row.
  • Annotate blur tool (R): drag a rectangle over anything you'd rather not send.
  • Image to Prompt asks which style you want. The shortcuts board shows your version.

2.30.0

Menu Overhaul, Dax Shots & Session Numbering

August 7, 2026

  • Menu bar shows everything: three columns instead of a scrolling list. Every tool on one screenful; adapts to narrower displays.
  • Agent Watch session numbering: two agents in one repo are now numbered (Dax 1, Dax 2) on the avatar and in the name. Only running sessions appear.
  • Dax Shots: Image to URL, Image Ask, Image to Prompt, and Image to Text save every picture to `~/Pictures/Dax Shots`, one folder per tool.
  • Clipboard History: menu-bar icon briefly becomes a downward arrow on copy instead of a chime (sound off by default now).
  • Signup flow: profile photo is its own skippable step; welcome screen auto-closes with a countdown.
  • Open Project remembers the agent you picked between launches.
  • Long toasts from AI Text Transform, Image to Text, and Context Fill no longer clip.

2.29.0

Agent Watch

August 7, 2026

  • Agent Watch (⌃⌥M): every Claude Code session you have running, in one panel. The project, the last thing the agent said, and what it's doing right now.
  • A character for every session: twenty-one pixel animals, one per project. They walk while an agent is working, shuffle when one wants you, and stand still when it's done.
  • Status lights (green, yellow, grey) and a timer showing how long a session has been in its current state.
  • Answer from the notification: type a reply and Dax puts it in the exact terminal tab that asked.
  • Open Project's toast now shows the agent's own logo or a folder icon instead of a generic window.

2.28.0

Clipboard History & Prompt Snippets

August 6, 2026

  • Clipboard History (⌃⌥C): everything you copy, still there when you need it back. Text, images, and files, searchable, with a full preview. Source app shown per entry. Password-manager concealed copies are never recorded.
  • Prompt Snippets (⌃⌥J): the prompts you keep retyping, one shortcut away. Type to search, ↩ to use. Toggle between copying and typing into the focused app.
  • Image annotation editor: draw arrows, boxes, and labels on a screenshot before sending it to Image to URL, Image Ask, or Image to Prompt. Toggle per tool in Settings.

2.27.1

August 6, 2026

  • Profile photos are now stripped of EXIF metadata (location, device, timestamp) before upload.

2.27.0

August 6, 2026

  • Full Screen button on generated images: appears on the image itself, plus ⌘F.
  • Profile photos stay in sync across devices. Dax refreshes on each session check.

2.24.0

Secrets, Context Fill & Fanout

July 30, 2026

  • Secrets (⌃⌥V): hand an API key to a coding agent without pasting it into the chat. Stored in Keychain, injected into a single command on approval, never printed.
  • Context Fill (⌃⌥X): snip a form question from the screen, get a paste-ready answer from your own Context Pack. Snip several and it answers each. Edit-and-remember folds corrections back for next time.
  • Fanout (⌃⌥D): open a terminal per repo with your agent running, tiled side by side. Works with Terminal and iTerm2.
  • Notch-friendly: a "Show icon in the Dock" option for Macs where the menu bar is hidden behind the notch.

2.23.0

Command History

July 28, 2026

  • Command History (⌃⌥Y): every command you've run, fuzzy-searchable. Reads your shell history (zsh, bash, fish, sh, ksh, tcsh). 100% local.
  • Toggle between Insert, New Terminal, or Copy with ⌘T. Destructive commands are inserted for review but never auto-run.
  • Ask AI and Image Ask now stay open until you close them, so you won't lose an answer to a stray click.
