Dax for macOS · Last updated: July 23, 2026
Dax is a menu-bar utility for developers. It has no advertising, no third-party trackers, and does not profile you or sell your data. Most of what it does happens entirely on your Mac. When something does leave your Mac, it's because you invoked a tool that needs the network — with two background exceptions, described plainly below: while you're signed in, Dax makes small periodic checks to keep your access valid, and (unless you opt out) sends anonymous usage counts.
Frequent CLIs never touches the network. Your saved commands are stored locally and typed directly into whatever app is focused; they are never transmitted. Inject MD, Open Project, Boilerplates, and Vibe History also work entirely on-device — they read and act on files already on your Mac and send nothing to us.
Your settings, shortcuts, and preferences are stored locally on your device.
Dax is invite-only. When you enter an invite code, it is sent to our service in exchange for a personal access token, which is stored in your Mac's Keychain. The AI tools below include this token with their requests so your usage counts against your monthly allowance. The token identifies your invite to our servers only; it is never forwarded to the third-party model providers described later. We don't ask for or store your name, email, contacts, or location beyond what your invite was issued against.
Data leaves your Mac only at the moment you press a tool's shortcut or button — never automatically because you copied something, and only the data that tool needs:
In every case, the content you submit is used solely to produce your result or handle your request. We do not use it to train models, build profiles, or serve ads.
Image to URL, File Drop, and Generate Image produce public links: anyone with the URL can access the content. Treat them like anything else you share — don't upload material you wouldn't want reachable by link. Uploaded files are automatically deleted after about 90 days, and you can request removal of any upload sooner by contacting us.
Ask AI, AI Text Transform, Image to Prompt, Image Ask, and Generate Image are powered by third-party AI model providers (reached through OpenRouter and image-model services). The text or image you submit is passed to the relevant provider, under its own privacy terms, solely to generate your result. We send providers only the content of your request — not your access token, your identity, or device identifiers beyond what a network request inherently carries.
While you are signed in and online, Dax periodically checks that your access is still valid (about once a minute) so it can respond if your invite is suspended or revoked, and it refreshes your remaining monthly allowance when it launches. These checks send only your access token — never any of your content — and stop when you're offline.
Dax includes no third-party analytics, advertising SDKs, or trackers. It does collect first-party, anonymous usage stats — which tools get opened and how often — so tool popularity is visible. These events carry only an anonymous install identifier (a random value created on first launch, not tied to any account or personal data), the app version, and your macOS version — never the content you submit. You can turn this off any time in Settings → "Share anonymous usage stats," and it never sends anything while you're offline.
Dax requests macOS Accessibility permission so Frequent CLIs can type commands into your focused app; it is used only to send those keystrokes and does not read your screen or log what you type elsewhere. It requests Screen Recording permission only so the snip-based tools can capture a screen region you draw when you use them. Neither permission is used to monitor other apps in the background.
Dax updates itself with signed, notarized builds via Sparkle. An update check is a request to a static file hosted on GitHub; the build is downloaded from GitHub Releases. Like any web request it carries your IP address and a standard user-agent, but Dax sends no profiling payload about your system.
Content submitted to the AI tools is processed to generate your result and is not retained by us as stored files afterward. Uploads made with Image to URL, File Drop, and Generate Image remain available at their link until they expire (about 90 days) or you request deletion. Server logs may record basic request metadata (timestamps, sizes, status codes) for reliability and abuse prevention, but are not used to build a profile of you.
Dax is a developer utility and is not directed at children under 13.
If the app's data practices change, this page will be updated and the date above revised. Meaningful changes will be called out in the release notes of the update that introduces them.
